Outreach and Communication
How does your hospital encourage and seek out minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veteran business enterprises to become potential suppliers?
Children's Hospital Los Angeles is committed to prioritizing the procurement of goods and services to support the fulfillment of its mission from a diverse set of vendors. Children's Hospital Los Angeles partners with its community and stakeholders to proactively identify vendors owned by representatives of minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veterans. In tandem with its Supplier Diversity Program, CHLA leverages its long-standing connections and networks in support of deeper relationships with organizations that support and promote minority, women, LGBTQ+ and disabled veteran businesses. This year, CHLA hosted a Supplier Diversity Day with the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) where suppliers and supplier diversity professionals were able to connect and matchmake. In addition, CHLA’s external website has been updated and published to address supplier diversity and the procurement process within the organization. The Vendor Diversity Program Specialist is also in connection with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Seattle Children's Hospital, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Children's Mercy Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital. Together, the hospitals meet regularly to discuss best practices and learn how to grow programs to best promote or certify diverse and minority vendors. In addition, Cedars Sinai Health System and City of Hope are close partners in this initiative. In collaboration with HASC and a multitude of California hospitals, a list of California diverse and minority suppliers was created. This list is a working database where hospitals can find suppliers with hospital experience and who can contribute to the increase of diverse spend. This list is not closed or exclusive and intends to be regularly updated and monitored.
How does your hospital encourage its employees involved in procurement to seek out minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veteran business enterprises to become potential suppliers?
To maintain and grow the Supplier Diversity Program, CHLA collaborates with departments who make significant purchases to provide opportunities for subcontractors and minority/diverse businesses. These departments include Clinical Services, Facilities Management and Quality and Infection Prevention. The Supplier Diversity Program Specialist meets regularly with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Office of Community Affairs, and the Sustainability Committee to discuss diverse procurement and outreach opportunities. This past calendar year, the program specialist hosted an internal webinar with open discussion surrounding supplier diversity. Local events are recommended throughout the enterprise to encourage attending opportunities for learning more about supplier diversity.
How does your hospital conduct outreach and communication to minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veteran business enterprises?
CHLA's Sourcing and Procurement leverages our Group Purchasing Organization (Vizient) to identify suppliers in the diverse categories to increase CHLA's diversity supplier footprint. CHLA has hired a Supplier Diversity Program Specialist responsible for developing and managing all aspects of supplier diversity across CHLA and Ambulatory Sites to support organizational strategic goals. The role requires close partnership with various departments within CHLA, including Supply Chain, Community & Government Affairs, Office of DEI, various clinical and support service departments, and other leaders. In September 2023, the Supplier Diversity champion participated in a podcast lead by HASC along with another local hospital. This podcast's purpose was to encourage local minority and diverse businesses to reach out and to inform the community that CHLA is committed and serious about increasing opportunities. It was published for public viewing late last year and can be found through HASC (Hospital Supplier Diversity Initiative Podcast, Part 3 - HASC). Regular attendance at supplier diversity and procurement events is a long-term goal for CHLA’s program. Throughout CY2023, the champion has attended and participated in over a dozen in-person and virtual conferences, events and webinars. Education and networking are important in moving supplier diversity forward and understanding its multiple layers allows room for growth. Visibility is key to showing the community the commitment CHLA has to change the culture of diverse procurement. It is likely that there are some of our suppliers who may choose not to disclose their backgrounds or sexual orientation, for example, so our numbers may be higher than we can report here. To address this gap, we have revised our Supplier Request Form’s Supplier Diversity Information section to encourage participation. These revisions include dividing up “diverse” and “minority” classifications and the mention of AB962. The “Supplier Diversity” section is required to proceed with the approval process and will be returned if it is incomplete. A list of required information and documents are provided to expedite the approval process. As previously mentioned, CHLA’s external website has been updated to include a “How to Do Business with CHLA” page that also links to the “Supplier Diversity” page. The first page goes more in detail about expectations of suppliers, CHLA’s procurement policy and contact information. The Supplier Diversity page lists out the diverse and minority classifications as required through AB962.
