Outreach and Communication

How does your hospital encourage and seek out minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veteran business enterprises to become potential suppliers?

As we continue to develop and grow our supplier diversity program, our focus is to expand awareness and accessibility, both internally and externally. Some of the ways we encourage and seek out diverse suppliers include, but not limited to: We have developed a supplier diversity website Supplier Diversity Program | City of Hope with information on how to contact us (SupplierDiversity@coh.org), whereby diverse suppliers are enabled to connect directly with supplier diversity for introductions, inquire about opportunities, and any other communication. This information is also disseminated to diverse suppliers at all events, webinars, and presentations. We have a dedicated Manager that oversees our supplier diversity program, and who participates in supplier diversity events that are attended by small and diverse suppliers, including networking events, match-making sessions, trade fairs, supplier diversity conferences, webinars, best practices sessions, and speaking engagements, that provide access and education to the diverse supplier community, and another way of connecting with COH. We encourage diverse suppliers to register their company in the portal we subscribe to (www.supplierio.com) for vendor registration. This is one of the platforms we use to identify and reach out to diverse suppliers for potential opportunities. We collaborate with various supplier diversity organizations to help us announce and identify diverse suppliers for potential bid opportunities. We partner with Vizient, our GPO, on potential sourcing projects, to ensure consideration and inclusion of diverse suppliers, for immediate as well as medium and long-term project planning. Supplier Diversity collaborates with other HCAI hospital supplier diversity members, holding monthly meetings, to share best practices, address challenges, and facilitate introductions of diverse suppliers to our respective organizations, with the mission to advance opportunities with diverse suppliers. In conjunction with the Southern California Minority Supplier Development Council, we nominate MBEs for Supplier of the Year (SOY) award, which provides further marketing exposure to the diverse suppliers. We also provide a scholarship to one of the winners of the Supplier of the Year, to attend one of the premier business schools of management.

Supplier Diversity attends weekly scheduled meetings with the Procurement team to connect and exchange information on sourcing projects, potential initiatives, and share status updates. In a collaboration effort to ensure diverse supplier inclusion, Supplier Diversity attends bi-monthly meetings with Vizient, which are also attended by internal stakeholders and sourcing teams, in evaluating potential future procurement projects. Supplier Diversity attends leadership staff meetings with various business units to present program overview, build relationships, encourage diverse supplier utilization, and offer help in identification and inclusion of diverse suppliers in purchasing activities. Facilitate diverse supplier introduction meetings with Procurement and other stakeholders. Incorporated diverse sub-contracting language (Tier II) into our agreements that are executed by Procurement with prime vendors to encourage diverse supplier utilization. Procurement team members and other decision makers are invited to participate in supplier diversity networking and conference events, meeting with diverse suppliers and learning about their offerings. Our Sourcing teams are provided access and training to established databases to search and identify diverse suppliers for inclusion in sourcing bid opportunities.
