2. Supplier Point of Contact, Outreach and Communication

Supplier Point of Contact

Outreach and Communication

How does your hospital encourage and seek out minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veteran business enterprises to become potential suppliers?

Children's Hospital Los Angeles is committed to prioritizing the procurement of goods and services to support the fulfillment of its mission from a diverse set of vendors. Children's Hospital Los Angeles partners with its community and stakeholders to proactively identify vendors owned by representatives of minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veterans. In tandem with its Supplier Diversity Program, CHLA leverages its long-standing connections and networks in support of deeper relationships with organizations that support and promote minority, women, LGBTQ+ and disabled veteran businesses. We continue to explore identified engagement opportunities with more than 10 support organizations that promote or certify minority, women, LGBTQ+ and disabled-veteran business enterprises. We will launch an external vendor portal for suppliers to connect with CHLA if they desire to do business with us. The Supplier Diversity's mission is to build a community of equal opportunity through diversifying our suppliers and building honest partnerships with the vision to be the pediatric health system of choice for diverse suppliers.

How does your hospital encourage its employees involved in procurement to seek out minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veteran business enterprises to become potential suppliers?

To maintain and grow the Supplier Diversity Program, CHLA collaborates with departments who make significant purchases to provide opportunities for subcontractors and minority/diverse businesses. These departments include, but are not limited to: Clinical Services, Facilities Management and Quality and Infection Prevention. The Supplier Diversity Program Specialist meets regularly with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Office of Community Affairs, and the Sustainability Committee to discuss diverse procurement and outreach opportunities. We continue our contract with Dun and Bradstreet and Vizient to provide an additional level of visibility and opportunity to identify suppliers in the minority, women, LGBT+ and disabled veteran business community. A thorough due diligence Sourcing and Procurement screening and market research process allows us to identify diverse vendors, opportunities and understand their capacity to meet our needs.

How does your hospital conduct outreach and communication to minority, women, LGBT, and disabled veteran business enterprises?

CHLA's Sourcing and Procurement leverages our Group Purchasing Organization (Vizient) to identify suppliers in the diverse categories to increase CHLA's diversity supplier footprint. CHLA has recently hired a Supplier Diversity Program Specialist who is responsible for developing and managing all aspects of supplier diversity across CHLA and Ambulatory Sites in support of organizational strategic goals. The role requires close partnership with various departments within CHLA, including Supply Chain, Community Affairs, Office of DEI, various clinical and support service departments, and other leaders. This role also partners and works with external organizations and vendors. Continual attendance in workshops and community meetings is key when conducting outreach. Through making the program more visible and accessible to other hospitals, best practices are discussed, and minority vendors are shared. The Office of Community Affairs assists in outreaching to local chambers and external partnerships. It is likely that there are some of our suppliers who may choose not to disclose their backgrounds or sexual orientation, for example, so that our numbers are likely higher than we can report here. To address this gap, we have revised our Supplier Request Form’s Supplier Diversity Information section to encourage participation. These revisions include splitting up “diverse” and “minority” classifications and the mention of AB962.
