Coronary Artery Bypass Graft: Hospital Performance Ratings, 2021

120 state-licensed hospitals performed adult CABG surgery during 2020-2021. The statewide isolated CABG mortality rate for 2021 was 2.4 percent.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery outcomes reports are based on data collected by the California Cardiovascular Outcomes Reporting Program (CCORP). The reports and visualizations provide quality ratings for the state-licensed hospitals that perform CABG surgery. During 2020-2021, 120 state-licensed hospitals performed adult CABG surgery.

The performance ratings are based on four key risk-adjusted outcomes: operative mortality for isolated CABG, operative mortality for CABG + Valve, post-operative stroke, and isolated CABG 30-day readmission.

Key Findings

  • The statewide isolated CABG mortality rate for 2021 was 2.4 percent. This is a decrease from the 2020 mortality rate of 2.6 percent, and represents a decrease of 17.2 percent since 2003, the first year of mandated reporting.
  • The operative mortality rate for CABG + Valve surgery in California was 5.8 percent in 2020-2021. This rate was higher than the 2019-2020 rate of 5.6 percent.
  • The post-operative stroke rate for isolated CABG surgery in California was 1.6 percent in 2020-2021. This rate is consistent with the post-operative stroke rate from 2019-2020 of 1.6 percent.
  • The statewide hospital all-cause unplanned 30-day readmission rate was 11.4 percent for those who underwent isolated CABG surgery in 2020-2021. This rate is lower than the 2019-2020 rate of 11.8 percent.
  • There is no consensus on an optimal usage rate for internal mammary artery (IMA), so performance ratings are not given. One hospital IMA usage rate was below 90 percent. The IMA average usage rate for all hospitals was 99.3 percent in 2021, 99.4 percent in 2020, and 89.6 percent in 2003.
