Happy National Rural Health Day

Today, we celebrate the providers, patients, and community members who embody the strength, resilience, and spirit of rural California. Rural Health Day is more than a recognition—it is a reminder of the deep commitment, compassion, and collaboration that sustain our communities every single day.

To our providers: Thank you for showing up with dedication, creativity, and heart. Your work often stretches far beyond the walls of a clinic. You are healers, advocates, problem-solvers, and trusted neighbors. Your commitment ensures that rural families have access to the care, dignity, and support they deserve.

To our patients and families: Thank you for your trust, your courage, and your partnership. Navigating care in rural areas can come with unique challenges, and your perseverance inspires us to continue building stronger, more responsive systems of support.

To our community members, leaders, and partners: Thank you for working together to create healthier, more connected rural communities. Whether you organize local resources, support public health efforts, or simply look out for one another, your actions make a meaningful difference.

Rural health is community health—and today we honor each of you who helps make that possible. Together, we continue building a future where every rural resident has access to compassionate care, support, and opportunity.

Thank you for all that you do.

The Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) is a federal initiative designed to strengthen health care in rural communities where access, workforce shortages, and infrastructure gaps create unique challenges.

HCAI submitted the RHTP application on behalf of the state. See the RHTP Program Overview and Project Abstract.

Established through H.R.1 and signed into law in July 2025, the program created the Rural Health Transformation Fund — a $50 billion investment over five years, available to all 50 states that apply. This funding is not intended to supplement Medicare or Medicaid, but rather to give states the resources to reimagine how rural health care is delivered and financed.

In California, the Department of Healthcare Access and Information’s State Office of Rural Health (CalSORH) is leading the effort. Guided by input from rural health leaders and feedback gathered through broad stakeholder engagement, CalSORH will use this plan to inform long-term investments, partnerships, and policy initiatives aimed at creating sustainable, resilient rural health systems.
