California Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Outcomes Report
Eighty-five state-licensed hospitals that performed TAVR procedures in 2024 are included in this report. One hospital performed worse on at least one indicator.
Introduction
The number of TAVR procedures have sharply increased nationwide and in California. This is the third California report for TAVR outcomes, and one of the earliest state-level reports in the country. It includes 85 state-licensed hospitals submitting TAVR data for 2024. The statewide in-hospital/30-day observed mortality rate was 1.55%.
Assembly Bill 133 (Chapter 143, Statutes of 2021) included revisions to existing law that allows the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) to expand cardiovascular outcomes reporting. In 2021, the HCAI Clinical Advisory Panel recommended the department proceed with hospital-level TAVR outcomes reporting. HCAI is required to use data collected by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS)/American College of Cardiology (ACC) Transcatheter Valve Therapy (TVT) Registry TM from licensed hospitals to create annual reports of performance ratings.
The information in this report provides hospitals with performance measures they can use in their review of internal processes of care and quality improvement activities, helps payers and employers spend their healthcare dollars more wisely, and helps consumers make better informed healthcare decisions.
Three hospitals: AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center, Los Angeles County/Harbor – UCLA Medical Center, and Los Angeles General Medical Center, are non-compliant with the California Code of Regulations as they failed to submit data or complete the data release consent form to the STS/ACC TVT RegistryTM for 2024.
Key Findings
- The statewide in-hospital/30-day mortality rate for 2024 was 1.55% (155 deaths after 10,024 procedures), lower than the national 30-day mortality rate of 2.00%.
- After adjusting for health conditions, 98.8% of hospitals were not significantly different from the statewide mortality rate; one hospital was rated worse.
- The statewide in-hospital/30-day stroke rate for 2024 was 1.79% (179 strokes after 10,024 procedures), below the national 30-day stroke rate of 2.2%.
- After adjustments, all hospitals were rated not significantly different from the statewide stroke rate.
