Coronary Artery Bypass Graft: Hospital Performance Ratings, 2022

120 state-licensed hospitals performed adult CABG surgery during 2021-2022. The statewide isolated CABG mortality rate for 2022 was 2.5 percent.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery outcomes reports are based on data collected by the California Cardiovascular Outcomes Reporting Program (CCORP). The reports and visualizations provide quality ratings for the state-licensed hospitals that perform CABG surgery. During 2021-2022, 120 state-licensed hospitals performed adult CABG surgery.

The performance ratings are based on four key risk-adjusted outcomes: operative mortality for isolated CABG, operative mortality for CABG + Valve, post-operative stroke, and isolated CABG 30-day readmission.

Key Findings

  • The statewide isolated CABG mortality rate for 2022 was 2.5 percent. This is an increase from the 2021 mortality rate of 2.4 percent, but represents a decrease of 13.8 percent since 2003, the first year of mandated reporting.
  • The operative mortality rate for CABG + Valve surgery in California was 5.7 percent in 2021-2022. This rate was lower than the 2020-2021 rate of 5.8 percent.
  • The post-operative stroke rate for isolated CABG surgery in California was 1.5 percent in 2021-2022. This rate was lower than the post-operative stroke rate from 2020-2021 of 1.6 percent.
  • The statewide hospital all-cause unplanned 30-day readmission rate was 11.3 percent for those who underwent isolated CABG surgery in 2021-2022. This rate is lower than the 2020-2021 rate of 11.4 percent.
  • There is no consensus on an optimal usage rate for internal mammary artery (IMA), so performance ratings are not given. The IMA average usage rate for all hospitals was 99.4 percent in 2022, 99.3 percent in 2021, and 89.6 percent in 2003.
