Coronary Artery Bypass Graft: Hospital Performance Ratings, 2024
120 state-licensed hospitals performed adult CABG surgery during 2023-2024. The statewide isolated CABG mortality rate for 2024 was 2.2%, slightly higher than 2.0% in 2023.
Introduction
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery outcomes reports are based on data collected by HCAI’s California Cardiovascular Outcomes Reporting Program (CCORP). The reports and visualizations provide quality ratings for the state-licensed hospitals that perform coronary artery bypass graft surgery. During 2023-2024, 120 state-licensed hospitals performed adult CABG surgery.
The hospital performance ratings are based on four key risk-adjusted outcomes: operative mortality for isolated CABG, operative mortality for CABG + Valve, post-operative stroke, and isolated CABG 30-day readmission. Data for 2023 and 2024 are combined for selected outcome measures to increase statistical power and reduce random variation in hospital performance ratings. Hospitals are rated “Better” when their rate is statistically lower than the statewide rate, “Worse” when their rate is statistically higher than the statewide rate, and “Average” when their rate is not statistically different from the statewide rate. All outcome measures are risk-adjusted to account for differences in patients’ health status and clinical risk factors prior to CABG surgery, allowing for fair comparisons across hospitals.
Why Publish Hospital Ratings for CABG Outcome Measures?
CABG surgery is one of the most common types of open-heart surgery and among the costliest inpatient procedures performed in California. Public reporting of CABG outcomes promotes transparency and accountability by providing information on hospital performance and quality of care. This report supports informed decision-making by patients, healthcare providers, purchasers, and policymakers while helping to identify opportunities for quality improvement and advance equitable access to high-quality cardiovascular care.
Key Findings
- The statewide isolated CABG mortality rate for 2024 was 2.2%. This was a slight increase from the 2023 mortality rate of 2.0%, but represents a decrease of 24.1% since 2003, the first year of mandated reporting. One hospital received a “Better” rating and four hospitals received a “Worse” rating.
- The operative mortality rate for CABG + Valve surgery in California was 4.9% in 2023-2024. This rate was lower than the 2022-2023 rate of 5.4%. One hospital received a “Better” rating and no hospital received a “Worse” rating.
- The post-operative stroke rate for isolated CABG surgery in California was 1.3% in 2023-2024. This rate was lower than the post-operative stroke rate from 2022-2023 of 1.4%. One hospital received a “Better” rating and six hospitals received a “Worse” rating.
- The statewide all-cause, unplanned 30-day hospital readmission rate was 11.0% for those who underwent isolated CABG surgery in 2023-2024. This rate was lower than the 2022-2023 rate of 11.2%. Nine hospitals received a “Better” rating and nine hospitals received a “Worse” rating.
