Elective Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Program Report, 2021

Twenty-one hospitals are now certified to perform elective PCIs without onsite cardiac surgery, and the procedure continues to be safe when performed in these hospitals.

The 2021 report provides two risk-adjusted outcome measures for PCI mortality and post-PCI stroke. Also included are observed events for post-PCI emergency coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

The report includes results for 21 certified hospitals and is the sixth outcomes report on hospitals certified to perform PCIs without on-site cardiac surgery

California Health and Safety Code §1256.01 authorizes the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to certify hospitals that do not have on-site cardiac surgery, and are licensed to provide cardiac catheterizations, to perform elective PCIs. These hospitals must meet specific requirements to perform elective PCIs for eligible patients. In addition, the Department of Health Care Access and Information(HCAI) is required to use data collected by the American College of Cardiology (ACC)-National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) from certified hospitals to create annual reports of performance for certified hospitals.

Key Findings

• The elective PCI mortality rate for the 21 certified hospitals was 0.07 percent compared to a statewide elective PCI mortality rate of 0.31 percent. The elective PCI mortality rate was 0.25 percent for the 20 certified hospitals in 2020.

• The elective PCI stroke rate for the 21 certified hospitals was 0.07 percent compared to a statewide rate of 0.18 percent. There were no strokes among the 20 elective PCI certified hospitals in 2020.

Note: Not Applicable risk-adjusted rates were not calculated as data needed to derive the statewide rate for comparison are no longer available in the NCDR CathPCI Registry.
