Hospital Performance Ratings Summary Report
When compared to the state average rates, 73 hospitals (21.6%) were rated “Better,” and 94 hospitals (27.8%) were rated “Worse” on at least one risk-adjusted outcome measure in 2023.
Why Publish Hospital Ratings for CABG, Elective PCI, IMI, PSI, PDI, and TAVR ?
This visualization was created to help assess hospital performance and quality of care for multiple outcomes. Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), elective Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), Inpatient Mortality Indicator (IMI), Patient Safety Indicator (PSI) – Postoperative Sepsis, Pediatric Quality Indicator (PDI), and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) ratings are published in this visualization to provide users with a tool to explore and compare state-licensed hospitals across selected performance measures from 2017 to 2023. The Hospital Comparison feature allows users to compare two California hospitals across all performance measures for a single year or multiple years from 2017 to 2023.
Key Findings
Hospitals were rated “Better,” “Worse,” or “As Expected” by comparing their risk-adjusted outcome measures with the overall state rates for each measure. Risk-adjustment is a statistical methodology that takes into account a patient’s age, assigned sex at birth, and underlying health conditions for fair comparisons among hospitals.
- When compared to the state average rates, 73 hospitals (21.6%) were rated “Better,” and 94 hospitals (27.8%) were rated “Worse” on at least one risk-adjusted outcome measure in 2023.
- Of the 73 better-rated hospitals in 2023, 47 were rated “Better” on a single measure, 15 on two measures, five on three measures, four on four measures, one on five measures, one on six measures.
- Of the 94 worse-rated hospitals in 2023, 52 were rated “Worse” on a single measure, 27 on two measures, eight on three measures, six on four measures, and one on five measures.
- There were 184 hospitals (54.4%) in 2023 rated “As Expected,” or not significantly different from the state average, for all 19 outcome measures.
- In 2023, most hospitals showed fairly consistent performance across all 20 outcome measures. However, 13 hospitals (3.8%) had “mixed” results – rated “Better” on at least one measure and “Worse” on at least one measure.
CABG Outcomes
The CABG outcomes report provides information on four risk-adjusted performance measures for state-licensed hospitals that perform CABG surgery, including Isolated CABG Operative Mortality. Detailed information on other CABG performance measures is available on the HCAI – Hospital Performance Ratings for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Surgery webpage.
Elective PCI Outcomes
The elective PCI outcomes report provides information on three performance measures for state-licensed hospitals that are certified to perform elective PCIs without on-site cardiac surgery. There are two risk-adjusted outcome measures: Elective PCI Mortality, and Elective PCI Stroke, plus information on PCIs that resulted in emergency CABG surgery. More information on elective PCI performance measures is available on the HCAI – Elective Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Program Report webpage.
IMI Outcomes
The IMIs are a subset of Inpatient Quality Indicators that are developed by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). They include six medical conditions plus three sub-measures: Acute Stroke (Hemorrhagic, Ischemic, and Subarachnoid), Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), Gastrointestinal (GI) Hemorrhage, Heart Failure, Hip Fracture, and Pneumonia and five surgical procedures: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Repair Endo Unruptured, AAA Repair Open Unruptured, Carotid Endarterectomy, Pancreatic Resection, and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). More information on IMIs is available on the HCAI – Inpatient Mortality Indicators (IMI) webpage.
Postoperative Sepsis Outcomes
The postoperative sepsis rate is part of the PSIs developed by AHRQ as a measure of adult patients who developed sepsis in the hospital following elective surgeries. More information on postoperative sepsis performance measures is available on the Postoperative sepsis webpage.
PDI Outcomes
PDIs specifically address the quality of care for pediatric patients, focusing on conditions and procedures relevant to children. PDIs include five medical conditions: accidental puncture or laceration, central venous catheter-related blood stream infection, neonatal blood stream infection, postoperative respiratory failure, and postoperative sepsis. More information on pediatric quality measures is available on the HCAI – Pediatric Quality Indicators webpage.
TAVR Outcomes
The TAVR outcomes report provides information on two risk-adjusted performance measures for state-licensed hospitals that are certified to perform TAVR. The two risk-adjusted outcomes measures are TAVR In-hospital/30-day mortality, and TAVR in-hospital/30-day stroke. More information on TAVR performance measures is available on the HCAI – California Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Outcomes Report.
Visualization
Note: The following measures were discontinued by AHRQ, starting with the 2023 report: Acute Stroke (Hemorrhagic, Ischemic, and Subarachnoid), Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair (Open and Unruptured), and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair (Endo and Unruptured). Blank spaces indicate no available data.
How HCAI Created This Product
The Hospital Performance Ratings Summary, 2017-2023 data visualization was built from data and measures published on six existing HCAI reports, which were merged based on the hospital’s identification number.
